Debt relief for developing nations - What we can do

Poorer countries owe a lot of money to richer countries and banks. Because of this, they spend more money paying debts than helping their own people. Even after years of payments, they are still stuck. Debt relief would help them build stronger communities and better futures.

Four Key Points About the Problem

1. Debt to Big to Handle:
Many countries can’t pay back their loans without cutting important things like schools and hospitals.

2. Big Problems Make It Worse:
Disasters like COVID-19 and climate change made it even harder for these countries to pay their debts.

3. Private Lenders Make It Harder:
About 40% of the debt is owed to private banks and lenders, who often refuse to lower the payments.

4. Bad Deals:
Some loans were made secretly, without citizens knowing, making it hard for people to speak up.

Guiding Question:
How can we help developing countries get free from debt?

1. Support Debt Cancellation Programs

We can support programs like the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI), which helps poor countries delay or cancel debt payments.
